One of the best things anyone of any age can do to keep their mind sharp is to keep their body healthy, and this summer, The Missourian will help young readers learn how to do both with its annual Summer Reading Program, “Fit to Read.”

Tiny, But Mighty

A young Kirkwood family who had ridden the Amtrak train to Washington last week knew exactly what to do when they found a Little Free Library standing inside the depot. Kirkwood has five such libraries, where people are invited to “Take a Book, Return a Book.”

Spelling bee champions from 38 area schools will compete in The Missourian’s regional spelling competition — The Bee — Saturday, April 23, at 9 a.m. at East Central College.

Ready. Set. Read!

Anyone who attended The Missourian’s Run to Read event a few years ago to hear children’s author/illustrator Meghan McCarthy’s presentation may remember her talking a little about how crazy the 1904 Olympic Marathon held in St. Louis was. She was in the middle of doing research for a book about the marathon and was shocked by what she was learning.

This Baby Buzz Pick Will Help With Speech, Language Skills

There’ll be sing-alongs and plenty of giggles when reading “The Ants Go Marching,” an interactive board book by Priscilla Burns. The book is the newest chosen by parent educators with the Washington School District as a Baby Buzz Pick.

2013 Family Reading Night is Friday, March 1

Children, parents, grandparents and volunteers will gather to “Share a Dragon’s Tale” at the 13th annual Family Reading Night, a free community event to be held Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Washington Middle School.
